Baby Frankie

Well I suppose its about time I got back to blogging.  I used to love writing blogs and was always thrilled to post them so I could get some feedback.  But I drifted away from blogging and have found it difficult to return.

Since I've been rather busy lately I thought I'd take the opportunity to share over these next few weeks all that I've been up to.  I've had some great sessions with babies, families and even adults.  And even did some product work, cremation jewelry believe it or not.  And now, today, the school portraits season has begun.  So I will be very busy over these next few months but that should provide me with loads to share.

I thought I'd kick off the blogging with some work for a returning client with their latest addition to the family, Frankie.  They did as advised and came over for a session when Frankie was about 2 weeks old.  Ideally between 10-14 days is great.  In fact they came again a week later for some additional family portraits and already we all noticed the difference.  Where in the first session he slept through everything, the second session we couldn't get him to sleep through any of it.  Many of the images from the first session would have been impossible at just over 3 weeks.

It was at this session that I was able to use a new prop that I acquired while out for coffee at Whitemoors Antiques in Shenton.  What a great find, which amazingly I walked right past.  If it wasn't for my wedding photographer friend spotting the baby weighing scales I would have missed out.  I still can't believe he spotted them and I didn't.

This was yet another session I thoroughly enjoyed with clients that once again made me feel like the time I spend with them isn't actually work, which is another reason I love what I do.

Well thats about all for now. Can't believe I've left blogging for so long. It feels great to be back into it. Can't wait to write another one.

I hope you enjoyed the portraits.  If you did I've love to hear.  And if you know anyone about to have a baby please share.  Newborns are definitely my favourite subject, even if they do make me want another baby.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more.

Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. It tends to be parents of very young children who want to capture moments that are slipping through their fingers at lightening speed. Maybe its teenage moodiness that means these moments don't fe…

A Beautiful New Dress Lovingly Handmade

Recently I had the opportunity to work with a wonderful woman, Nedine, who made this gorgeous dress for me. You can find Nedine here. She specialises primarily in making elaborate costumes but is branching out into dresses as well. Together we shared ideas for this piece and visited Birmingham to check out a large fabric store for inspiration and of course fabric. The end result is this.

I'm in love with lace and flowing dresses. We saw lots of beautiful lace and one day I hope to work up to something that will include some of the incredible (but very expensive) lace we saw while out together. I had no idea lace was that expensive. I knew good lace wouldn't be cheap but never realised how quickly the price went up to a range quite far from my current budget. So we decided to start relatively small, before investing in lace that was in some cases more than 10 times the cost of the lace used here. I can't imagine how scary that is to work with.

I love the dress, the quality …

Here's What I Got Up to with Bowens at TPS?

Well we are finished once again for another year. It comes and goes so quickly these days and I spend most of it both loving and fearing the experience. I'm someone who thoroughly enjoys speaking to an audience but loathes the anticipation of it all. Well thats not strictly true. I look forward to the event until just before it when the nerves take over and turn my stomach upside down. And then when its all over I want to do it all over again. I'm already thinking of ideas for next year. (If you have anything you wish to see please get in touch. New ideas are always welcome)
I have to admit I was pretty impressed with the turnout for the demos on the Bowens stage. Each time I participate in one of these events I wonder just how many people will be interested in what I have to say. And each time I feel honoured and proud to see such a large audience. It was a fantastic experience and one I feel very lucky to be a part of. I asked for these images to be taken not because I like…

Portraits of Another Gorgeous French Bulldog

I can't say enough how much I adore photographing this breed of dog. They just seem so photogenic to me, with so much character and such a lovely temperament. I think I could photograph these sweet things everyday.
This one was a little frightened being on the wooden boxes. We weren't sure really why. It wasn't too tall that she couldn't jump down if she wished but for some reason we struggled to get her to settle. She just remained glued to the spot, which I suppose helped us in a way. In my attempt to get her to settle we tried a variety of boxes to see if she felt more stable on different ones and I think we finally got there. There is something about having the dogs sitting or standing on these wooden boxes that really appeals to me. And the ones in the boxes I think are just so sweet.
The beanbag was a little easier. She certainly looked more comfortable but keeping her there was a little more difficult. When she wanted down she just left. But for the most part s…

Portraits of a Beautiful Young Woman and Her Guitar

You may remember a while back when I did a casting call looking for teenage boys and girls. Well this is the girl I chose. I had quite a specific look in mind, one which included really long hair. I have always had a thing for long hair. The choice also became quite simple when this young lady put herself forward as she is someone I've been photographing through school for several years and she is a past member of the Hinckley Athletics Club where she has been coached by my husband for nearly as many years. He's always had a soft spot for her, being one of his first members which helped my decision. When I have projects where I want to work with a model rather than a paying client I like to use friends or past clients whenever possible as it enables me to give something to those who have been loyal to me.

Wallis has been a pleasure to work with. She is a stunning, confident young woman. In addition, she could bring props with her that I love. I've been wanting to photogra…
