Portraits of a Couple of Great Teenage Girls

One recent client came to me to purchase the wonderful birthday gift of a portrait session for her daughter's 13 year old friend.  What a great idea for the two girls to play models for the afternoon.

I really love these sessions because its such fun working with subjects that really want to be there.  They aren't being bribed to behave.  They aren't reluctantly contributing to the family portrait.  And they aren't desperate for a feed or a nap.  They can take direction and they see the experience as a real treat.  And that reminds me of just how lucky I am to do what I do for a living.  It is an exciting job and its easy to forget that when doing the day to day stuff.

The aim was to produce a few portraits of the two together so they could each have a keepsake of this shared experience.  And then it was to let the girls have a bit of fun in a sort of fashion shoot.  I always love the simple beauty of a black background so I began with this.  For me its best to get a guaranteed winner at the start and then enjoy the remainder of the session having fun and trying different things.

The girls particularly liked a couple of backgrounds I have in my studio.  I have a large PVC board with one side covered in magazine covers and portraits and the other side covered in wallpaper.  We had a go at both.

Then I finished off with the white background.  We ended up spending a total of 3 hours on this shoot which included numerous outfit changes and a whole lot of mess.  My studio resembled a teenage girl's bedroom before a big party.  Thankfully though, it cleans rather quickly once they pack there things and leave, taking their suitcases full of choice with them.  It looked a little like they were moving in when they arrived.  But bringing all this choice is important and exactly what I asked for so I'm not complaining.

If you have a young girl (or boy for that matter) who you think would enjoy such a session please get in touch so we can discuss your requirements.  Call us on 01455 611069 or send us an email at christina_lauder@btconnect.com

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more.

Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. It tends to be parents of very young children who want to capture moments that are slipping through their fingers at lightening speed. Maybe its teenage moodiness that means these moments don't fe…

Here's What I Got Up to with Bowens at TPS?

Well we are finished once again for another year. It comes and goes so quickly these days and I spend most of it both loving and fearing the experience. I'm someone who thoroughly enjoys speaking to an audience but loathes the anticipation of it all. Well thats not strictly true. I look forward to the event until just before it when the nerves take over and turn my stomach upside down. And then when its all over I want to do it all over again. I'm already thinking of ideas for next year. (If you have anything you wish to see please get in touch. New ideas are always welcome)
I have to admit I was pretty impressed with the turnout for the demos on the Bowens stage. Each time I participate in one of these events I wonder just how many people will be interested in what I have to say. And each time I feel honoured and proud to see such a large audience. It was a fantastic experience and one I feel very lucky to be a part of. I asked for these images to be taken not because I like…

Portraits of Another Gorgeous French Bulldog

I can't say enough how much I adore photographing this breed of dog. They just seem so photogenic to me, with so much character and such a lovely temperament. I think I could photograph these sweet things everyday.
This one was a little frightened being on the wooden boxes. We weren't sure really why. It wasn't too tall that she couldn't jump down if she wished but for some reason we struggled to get her to settle. She just remained glued to the spot, which I suppose helped us in a way. In my attempt to get her to settle we tried a variety of boxes to see if she felt more stable on different ones and I think we finally got there. There is something about having the dogs sitting or standing on these wooden boxes that really appeals to me. And the ones in the boxes I think are just so sweet.
The beanbag was a little easier. She certainly looked more comfortable but keeping her there was a little more difficult. When she wanted down she just left. But for the most part s…

Portraits of a Beautiful Young Woman and Her Guitar

You may remember a while back when I did a casting call looking for teenage boys and girls. Well this is the girl I chose. I had quite a specific look in mind, one which included really long hair. I have always had a thing for long hair. The choice also became quite simple when this young lady put herself forward as she is someone I've been photographing through school for several years and she is a past member of the Hinckley Athletics Club where she has been coached by my husband for nearly as many years. He's always had a soft spot for her, being one of his first members which helped my decision. When I have projects where I want to work with a model rather than a paying client I like to use friends or past clients whenever possible as it enables me to give something to those who have been loyal to me.

Wallis has been a pleasure to work with. She is a stunning, confident young woman. In addition, she could bring props with her that I love. I've been wanting to photogra…

When a Family Returns to Update Their Portraits

I love receiving calls from past clients wanting to update their family portraits. It means so much that my work was appreciated enough the first time that they want to return rather than finding someone else. And I get the chance to catch up and see how everyone has grown. This is more of an honour than I'm sure my clients realise.

(Their portrait from March 2008)
The boys sure have changed loads but I have to say I don't think Mum and Dad have and its been nearly 9 years since the last portrait was taken. That's pretty impressive.  It was great to see their family had expanded too since I last saw them. They all had such a loving and lovely relationship. They were a joy to work with. Very easy to photograph with such natural smiles.
Family portraits are the kind of thing we all put off as one of those things we will get around to one day. But look how much changes. I know it is my business to sell to you. But whether you book me or another photographer, or simply take …
