And yet Another Client Returns with Their Second Baby for Portraits

At first the thought of working with a very young child and their newborn sibling scared me. Its hard enough working with either on their own let alone trying to get them to co-operate together.  How would this even be possible? A 16 month old little girl can't come close to holding their baby brother. So I had to get creative and think of a way to get the 2 together both safely and beautifully.
Well I think I did it. I have to admit though, the above is actually 2 separate images. This little girl was a bit too young to understand how careful with the pram she would need to be so rather than take any chances I first photographed big sister with just the pram on its own and then followed with baby brother on his own while dad looked after big sister. Then I worked my magic in Photoshop to put the 2 together. This is a common occurrence when photographing young babies. Its always better to be safe than sorry and I'm quite thankful I have the tools and skills to do such things.

What makes this image even more special is that there is continuity between this portrait of the sibling group and the newborn portraits that big sister had of her own a year and a half ago. They both included my favourite pram. And now this image shows just how much this little girl has grown since her session.
(portrait from the 2014 session of big sister as a newborn baby)

I always love including the baby weighing scales too. I love the look and I like that the weight is pretty accurate so it tells something about baby as well. This time I used a new set of drawers that I recently painted.  I love collecting furniture and this is something for which I am always on the look out.
And of course I was able to provide some of the more simple details shots that are so wonderful to look back on in time. They grow so fast and these cute tiny little hands and feet won't be tiny for long. I think they work perfectly in a collection of images such as the one below.
Once again, it is so nice to see past clients return. I love knowing that they valued my work enough to want to do it all over again and at the same time I get to see how these beautiful little babies have grown.

If you are expecting a child and interested in having one of these sessions please don't leave it too late to get in touch. The ideal time for portraits such as these is when baby is less than 2 weeks old and you'll want to make sure we have the space to accommodate you when the time comes so its best to get in touch before baby is born.

To get in touch please contact me via my website here or give me a call on 01455 611069.

Creating Real Portraits and Valuable Keepsakes.

Since I began as a photographer it has been my goal to provide more than just a photograph.  I don't want to provide snap shots of a person but instead create something about the person.  Just yesterday I heard an educator in the field refer to one of his friends who said that a photograph is OF someone but a portrait is ABOUT someone.  And that is what I want to create for my clients, portraits about them, whenever I get the opportunity.

I've recently, thanks to my Fellowship, developed a style that is perfect for photographing a child that shows a little about themselves.  And while creating my Fellowship I was fortunate enough to have a client like one of the images and ask for it for her daughter.  She said her 3 year old loves dolls and doll prams and that shot would be perfect for her.  So I asked her about her son and what he likes to do so I could come up with something for him.  "He plays rugby", she said.  Perfect I thought.  "How do you feel about ge…

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more.

Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. It tends to be parents of very young children who want to capture moments that are slipping through their fingers at lightening speed. Maybe its teenage moodiness that means these moments don't fe…

I am Still Me: A Story about a Transgender Boy

Meet Leo. Leo is 15 and currently going through an epic transformation that has momentarily turned the lives of himself and those around him upside down. A mum who once had the daughter she always longed for is now coping with the realisation that she will be living the rest of her life with a son instead. When your child is born you have certain expectations of the typical life they will lead but most of us know and accept that it won't necessarily end up the way we imagine. Not every person wants to marry, have kids or be involved with the opposite sex. Most of us have come to accept this and can adjust to whatever comes our way relatively easily. But few of us have expected to have to deal with a change in sex. Its not that we've hoped it won't happen, but just that it never occurred to us that it might. This is a new adjustment that we as a society are being presented with today, just like so many others that have come before.

Teen Portrait Shoots, Memories to Last a Lifetime

Teen portraits are a big thing in America. And by big I mean huge. Americans call them seniors shoots, because they are sessions that take place to commemorate the completion of their senior year, the year they graduate high school. It's seen as an important milestone and for this they want to create a valuable keepsake before they head off to college.
(This young lady plays the bass and guitar, which provides wonderful elements to a great portrait)

Now for the record, for anyone who knows I have an American sounding accent and have believed me to be American I am actually Canadian. I don't think all American traditions should make it across the pond. I for one am not a big fan of Halloween, no offense to those who are. I can see the appeal of Halloween, its just not for me. However I don't understand why shoots for teenagers hasn't become popular over here and I'd really like to see that change.

Introducing Claude - Another Fantastic French Bulldog

I know this breed is becoming very popular, I believe even set to take over the top spot for most popular breed from the Golden Labrador, but I never expected to get quite so many in my studio. Can't say I'm complaining though. They have such a wonderful character and I love to capture those adorable squished up faces.

This client came in not just for personal portraits though. Instead she is developing a line of homemade all natural dog treats called Claude's Little Doggie Bag and these portraits are to be used in her labels. Which is partly the reason why these images differ quite drastically from my usual style.

This client had a very specific idea for what she wanted on her labels. But again, this is perfect for me because I just love variety. I don't really want to be creating the same work over and over again. This gave me the opportunity to revisit a style I've not used in some time.
