Workshop Dates for 2016

The dates have been set for this year's workshops. For the first time ever I actually decided to set dates right at the start of the year. I just meant to announce the dates earlier than this. But with the London Convention, recovery from the convention, photographing 3 playgroups, followed by an ever so annoying cold I contracted from said playgroups (one of the many joys of working with kids) I am now only announcing my dates.

Dates for Workshops at my studio
Tuesday March 1st
Tuesday April 19th
Tuesday May
Tuesday July 5th

Each day will begin at 9:30 and finish at roughly 4:30 (although I am prepared to let this run over if necessary).  The cost is £195 per delegate and it includes refreshments and lunch.

Subject: Foundations in Portrait Lighting - In Depth and Hands On

Beginning with the basics in lighting and working up to more complex techniques this workshop will provide a solid foundation in lighting principles making this ideal for both the beginner and more advanced. It will be very much a hands on workshop allowing all delegates a chance to use the equipment and create some pieces of their own.

This workshop is being limited to only 4 delegates so we will be able to cater the training to their needs and it will of course include plenty of time for each delegate to receive the attention they require. If time permits we can take a look at editing as well.

At Newborns by Nicola in Arbroath, Scotland

Subject: Foundations in Portrait Lighting

This is the same workshop as listed above however we will be accepting 6 delegates on this workshop as Nicola's studio is much larger.

Date: Tuesday June 14th from 9:30-4:30

The cost is £195 per delegate and it includes refreshments and lunch.

Subject: Baby Portraiture: From two perspectives

Working in collaboration with Nicola of Newborns by Nicola you will be guided through lighting, posing and styling newbron and baby portrait sessions giving you a unique and dual perspective into baby portraiture.

Date: Wednesday June 15th from 9:30-4:30

The cost is £225 per delegate and it includes refreshments and lunch.

* £395 for both of the above workshops

In addition to the above dates I also offer one to one sessions at dates of your choosing. The cost for this is £350. This is an ideal way to have a full day focused entirely on your needs, whether that be lighting, styling, or editing.

If any of this is of interest to you please get in touch. You can email me at christina@christinalauderportraits.com or phone on 01455 611069 or contact me via our website here.

Creating Real Portraits and Valuable Keepsakes.

Since I began as a photographer it has been my goal to provide more than just a photograph.  I don't want to provide snap shots of a person but instead create something about the person.  Just yesterday I heard an educator in the field refer to one of his friends who said that a photograph is OF someone but a portrait is ABOUT someone.  And that is what I want to create for my clients, portraits about them, whenever I get the opportunity.

I've recently, thanks to my Fellowship, developed a style that is perfect for photographing a child that shows a little about themselves.  And while creating my Fellowship I was fortunate enough to have a client like one of the images and ask for it for her daughter.  She said her 3 year old loves dolls and doll prams and that shot would be perfect for her.  So I asked her about her son and what he likes to do so I could come up with something for him.  "He plays rugby", she said.  Perfect I thought.  "How do you feel about ge…

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more.

Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. It tends to be parents of very young children who want to capture moments that are slipping through their fingers at lightening speed. Maybe its teenage moodiness that means these moments don't fe…

I am Still Me: A Story about a Transgender Boy

Meet Leo. Leo is 15 and currently going through an epic transformation that has momentarily turned the lives of himself and those around him upside down. A mum who once had the daughter she always longed for is now coping with the realisation that she will be living the rest of her life with a son instead. When your child is born you have certain expectations of the typical life they will lead but most of us know and accept that it won't necessarily end up the way we imagine. Not every person wants to marry, have kids or be involved with the opposite sex. Most of us have come to accept this and can adjust to whatever comes our way relatively easily. But few of us have expected to have to deal with a change in sex. Its not that we've hoped it won't happen, but just that it never occurred to us that it might. This is a new adjustment that we as a society are being presented with today, just like so many others that have come before.

Teen Portrait Shoots, Memories to Last a Lifetime

Teen portraits are a big thing in America. And by big I mean huge. Americans call them seniors shoots, because they are sessions that take place to commemorate the completion of their senior year, the year they graduate high school. It's seen as an important milestone and for this they want to create a valuable keepsake before they head off to college.
(This young lady plays the bass and guitar, which provides wonderful elements to a great portrait)

Now for the record, for anyone who knows I have an American sounding accent and have believed me to be American I am actually Canadian. I don't think all American traditions should make it across the pond. I for one am not a big fan of Halloween, no offense to those who are. I can see the appeal of Halloween, its just not for me. However I don't understand why shoots for teenagers hasn't become popular over here and I'd really like to see that change.

Introducing Claude - Another Fantastic French Bulldog

I know this breed is becoming very popular, I believe even set to take over the top spot for most popular breed from the Golden Labrador, but I never expected to get quite so many in my studio. Can't say I'm complaining though. They have such a wonderful character and I love to capture those adorable squished up faces.

This client came in not just for personal portraits though. Instead she is developing a line of homemade all natural dog treats called Claude's Little Doggie Bag and these portraits are to be used in her labels. Which is partly the reason why these images differ quite drastically from my usual style.

This client had a very specific idea for what she wanted on her labels. But again, this is perfect for me because I just love variety. I don't really want to be creating the same work over and over again. This gave me the opportunity to revisit a style I've not used in some time.
