St. Bernard Puppy Portraits You're Going to Love

One of the things I love about my job is that I get to meet wonderful people, spend time with adorable babies and children and I get to have amazing cuddles and play time with gorgeous puppies. I absolutely adore puppies. I'm just not a huge fan of the responsibility of owning a dog. So this satisfies at least a little, the urge to get a puppy.
Although the more I do dog portraits the closer I am to buying one, much to my husbands dismay and my daughter's delight. But I'm just not there yet. And as much as I love this little guy, there was absolutely no chance he would win my heart over enough to buy him because this guy is going to be ginormous. He's only 4 and a half weeks and already he's rather large. For now I will stick with my 2 small cats. They are enough work and they cause enough mess.
I couldn't get over how big this little guy is. He's so young but already more than 13lbs. I held his paw expecting it to fit easily in my hand but it did not. It filled my hand which is one of the many aspects that makes him so gorgeous at this age. He's not yet grown into his features.
Unfortunately I had a very small window to create these wonderful portraits. He was asleep within about 20 minutes of arriving and I was told he'd be out for hours. So it wasn't a matter of letting him nap and getting back to it. We did what we could and then moved onto some sleeping images. But my favourites are the awake ones, not that he was very awake for any of them really. I had forgotten that young puppies are like newborns and do very little other than sleep.
I never saw myself as a pet photographer but the more I do the more I love them. It hardly feels like work. There is no skin retouching, no self conscious requests for digital nips, tucks and face lifts. Its just a whole lot of fun. I need more of this in my life.
If you'd like to capture your little one, whatever the age, please do get in touch. They are such a significant part of your life. Having something special like these that you can keep forever will mean so much one day.

You can contact me by either phone on 01455 610069 or send me a message through any of the links below if you'd like to discuss a session for your pet:

I am Still Me: A Story about a Transgender Boy

Meet Leo. Leo is 15 and currently going through an epic transformation that has momentarily turned the lives of himself and those around him upside down. A mum who once had the daughter she always longed for is now coping with the realisation that she will be living the rest of her life with a son instead. When your child is born you have certain expectations of the typical life they will lead but most of us know and accept that it won't necessarily end up the way we imagine. Not every person wants to marry, have kids or be involved with the opposite sex. Most of us have come to accept this and can adjust to whatever comes our way relatively easily. But few of us have expected to have to deal with a change in sex. Its not that we've hoped it won't happen, but just that it never occurred to us that it might. This is a new adjustment that we as a society are being presented with today, just like so many others that have come before.

Lighting Workshops in Scotland - A Look at What We Covered

I'll apologise now for the length of this blog post. Although I began it as just a summary of the my time away in Scotland it has quickly become a recap for those who attended the course. And it turns out I have a lot more to say than I anticipated.  So if this is too much detail then just feel free to look at the pictures.

It was my intention when setting out to do these workshops that I provide the type of lighting course I would have wanted when I was starting out.  I wanted to include all the elements that took me several workshops and seminars over several years to piece together, some of which I'd not actually taken the time to fully appreciate until recently. So I began with the basics and worked my way up to include all that is necessary to understand light for good, consistent portraiture.

We began with light patterns and their uses, the position of the lights to achieve the various light patterns and the catchlights you'd expect to see for the patterns.

I began m…

5 Reasons you Should Consider Getting a Professional Headshot

Headshots, or profile pictures are becoming a requirement of so many tools we regularly use or reference today. From Facebook to Linked In, Instagram to Twitter and often any website that represents a company for which you work or own will have a place to include a photograph that is meant to show your audience who you are. And how you present yourself there will tell your audience so much about you.

1. A profile picture is your first opportunity for your audience to see you. Its often the first impression you make and we all know you only have one chance at a first impression. A professional photographer has the skills to show you in the best, most suitable way to give a great first impression.

(These headshots were created for recruitment firm Optima UK who asked to have their logo placed behind them. I think it makes these headshots quite eye catching and they should do their job well.)

2. Using a professional to create your headshot will convey your professionalism to your audience.…

Fuji Announces the New X-T2 and I've Been One of the Lucky Testers!!

I have been one of the few fortunate ones to be selected by Fuji to test Fuji's newest mirrorless camera from the perspective of an SLR user. Today Fuji have announced the release of this camera, the X-T2, (X-T1 being its predecessor). It was such an honour to be selected for this task and I truly enjoyed the experience. I've been hearing such great things about Fuji's cameras over the past couple of years I've wanted to try one myself but when you own a perfectly good camera, in my case the Canon 5D MKIII, its hard to justify trying an entirely new system. As any photographer will confirm, in this industry there is always new kit we want to purchase. So getting to test one out for free was really quite awesome.

Now I am not going to say that I prefer one over the other at this stage. My use of the Fuji is still relatively new. To be perfectly honest they both have very good selling points and I'd struggle to say one is better than the other. But if I were just sta…

Portraits Even a Teenager Boy Loves

Finally I've had the opportunity to photograph a young man in my studio again. And funnily enough this was the second time that week which is absolutely superb. In both cases these young men were just as enthusiastic to be involved as I was, which is something I don't often get when I'm working with very young children, my usual subjects. With young children I find my energy in their cuteness. But with young adults I get energy from their excitement over how the portraits are working out. I get such a buzz from the experience and that can keep me going for hours, often editing the photos straight after the shoot for hours more.

Shoots for teenagers is something I've been wanting to focus on for some time. Its not something that I often get asked for though unfortunately. It tends to be parents of very young children who want to capture moments that are slipping through their fingers at lightening speed. Maybe its teenage moodiness that means these moments don't fe…
